How to Use Gift Cards
This article explains how gift cards work after creation and what to keep in mind when using them.
Using Gift Cards
-
Once a gift card is created, it is immediately ready to use. Learn how to create gift cards here.
-
You can send it manually to customers or integrate it into your sales processes automatically.
-
When a gift card is redeemed, the system automatically deducts an amount up to the total value of the shopping cart — it's not possible to choose a smaller amount manually.
🔹 Example: If your cart total is €200 and you have a gift card worth €100, €100 will automatically be deducted from the gift card. You cannot choose to redeem only €50.
-
Remaining balance on the gift card is preserved and can be used for future purchases.
🔹 Example: If your cart total is €30 and you use a gift card worth €100, the remaining €70 stays on the card for your next purchase.
-
Currently, it is not possible to view the remaining balance of a gift card within the system.
-
For returns, the refunded amount will be automatically credited back to the gift card, provided the return is processed correctly.
Note: For gift cards to work properly, your store's theme must be up to date. If issues occur despite using the latest theme, removing and re-adding the page can resolve the problem. Gift cards are currently supported in all themes except the Ares theme. Support for Ares will be added in the future.
Gift Cards vs. Discount Codes
-
Gift cards can be used multiple times, even partially, until the total balance has been fully spent.
-
Discount codes are generally valid for a single order only. Even if configured for multiple use, they do not function as a balance but as a fixed amount or percentage deducted per use.
-
Multiple gift cards can be applied during checkout at the same time – whereas only one discount code can be used per order.
-
In case of returns, the refunded amount is automatically credited back to the original gift card. If this is not desired, the refund can be adjusted manually.
